Words to Live By!

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered, 'Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that the does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.'

Grand Turk 2011

This year Houston and I had a great time scuba diving in Grand Turk for the annual Ezell family scuba diving trip! Grand Turk is in the Turks and Caicos Islands near the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a British Colony. Grand Turk is the capital of the islands, but not the biggest. The tourism industry is apparently exploding down there. We experienced the effects of this when we waited (for what seemed like forever) in the smoldering heat outside to get through their security to board our plane back to Atlanta. The airport was packed with tourists, but the local people didn't seem to be in any hurry. Our first day on the island I had a bit of trouble adjusting to their relaxed attitude. It was nothing to wait an hour for dinner to arrive! But after the first day we just accepted it and enjoyed the leisure time. Our dinner meals ususally took several hours which was a nice change from the fast pace of the USA. Generally the island was quiet and peaceful. The only exception was when the cruise ships would come in for a few hours.

We were out on the dive boat every day from 9 til 1. There were two day dives and then some of the group went out for night diving twice. I didn't do much diving but I did see some baracuda, a shark, a sting ray, and a lot of colorful, beautiful fish that I do not know the names of. One of my favorite days was when we took a boat to a tiny deserted island to have lunch and pet sting rays. We saw so many! That day we also saw several nurse and lemon sharks.

This was the TINY plane we took from Providenciales to Grand Turk. Our group took up the whole plane.

The view out our bedroom window!

Off this coast there have been about 1000 ship wrecks!

Houston about to go down.
